Job posting: Communications Volunteer

First published 9th Mar 2015

Every Casualty is looking for a volunteer to support our team in sustaining its communication activities to the general public and partners and supporters in civil society.

Every Casualty works with partners around the world to advance casualty recording as a universal practice.  Its call is for states and other parties to ensure that every casualty of armed violence is promptly recorded, correctly identified and publicly acknowledged, a call which is receiving greater attention in international policy arenas including in Geneva and New York.  Every Casualty is also working with a global network of casualty recording organisations to improve practice, including through the creation of internationally-recognised standards for such work.

The successful candidate will:

  • Identify, edit where necessary and post relevant news items and other content on the Every Casualty website and maintain a consistent output on the @everycasualty twitter account;

  • Compile periodic newsletters to update members of the Casualty Recorders Network and supporters of the Every Casualty Campaign;

  • provide logistical support for platform meetings and events.

  • Be available to start work in April 2015

The ideal candidate will

  • be skilled in the use of modern communications tools, including social media

  • be comfortable in the use of web content management systems, and possess basic knowledge of html

  • have a good understanding of peace, security and human rights issues, including in relation to international or internal armed conflict;

  • be able to communicate clearly and effectively with a range of audiences and stakeholders, including those for whom English is not the first language.

The volunteer would be required to work 1 day per week at minimum, and up to a maximum of 2 days by agreement, for 3 months beginning in April. The location will be at Every Casualty’s London Office (close to Old Street Tube Station). We can offer flexibility in working hours to enable any existing academic or employment commitments to be met.  Reasonable travel and lunch expenses will be covered.

To apply, please send an up-to-date CV (with contact details of one referee) along with a cover letter of no more than 500 words indicating how you meet the criteria for the role to hamit.dardagan@everycasualty.org.

Closing date: 5pm Monday 16th March 2015

While Every Casualty will endeavour to contact all candidates within a reasonable time, this may not always be possible due to limited resources. Therefore, if you have not heard from us within two weeks of the closing date, you can assume that your application has, on this occasion, been unsuccessful. Every Casualty is an equal opportunities employer. All applicants will be judged strictly on the basis of merit.
