In Turkey, despite the history of gross human rights violations, the impression of those subjected to these violations is that the perpetrators have remained immune from punishment. The institutional and social indifference towards the crime and its perpetrator deepens the wounds of the victims and hinders the practices of reckoning with, understanding and redeeming the past. In addition, prosecution and retribution mechanisms remain rudimentary. Truth Justice Memory Center was established in November 2011 by a group of human rights activists, journalists and lawyers to advocate for an adequate institutional and societal response to past grave violations of human rights targeted especially against national minorities. The field of study of the Center is enforced disappearances that mainly occurred after the coup d’état of 1980 and especially during the 1990s. The Center collects detailed information on enforced disappearance cases from various sources including the families of the victims, lawyers, human rights activists, prosecutorial offices and court files; analyzes the collected data, forms an online database and publishes reports; monitors ongoing cases and tries various judicial intervention methods in order to push for justice.
