Created in 2006 by a researcher at the IRD (Institut de recherche pour le développement) in France, Nigeria Watch monitors violence and lethal conflicts in Nigeria. In a country where there are few criminal statistics, it helps to compensate for the lack of reliable data by crosschecking various sources of information. The objective is to measure physical risks and to quantify and qualify homicides and violent deaths, including accidents. The database is updated and used on a daily basis. It answers four fundamental questions:

  • Is violence rising or decreasing?
  • What are the main causes of violence (criminal, political, accidental, ethnic, religious, etc.)?
  • What is the probability of being killed?
  • Where does violence happen?
